In the last issue of the magazine we brought to you the gorgeous honeymoon of Louise and McGill, we couldn’t resist showing you even more photos and even more details of their wonderful getaway!
Honeymoons are bigger than ever, traditionally the first opportunity for a bride and groom to go away together, it is now seen as an opportunity to really push the boat out and fulfil a few wild travel fantasies! Honeymoons these days are planned with the same careful consideration as the wedding itself. Louise & McGill Needham, both originally from Sheffield and now living in Stokesley, were married on Saturday 29th September 2012 at All Saints Church, Harworth, Doncaster, followed by a wedding reception with friends and family.
We spent two weeks in Riviera Maya, which is the Caribbean Coast shoreline of Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula. We were brave and booked to travel two days after our wedding on 1st October – even though this is still officially ‘hurricane season’! We were pretty open to inspiration, however we knew we wanted guaranteed sunshine and heat, so in October we were restricted to certain options. We had travelled to Cuba together previously and loved it, so the Caribbean appealed.
We did plenty of research, as there are so many gorgeous resorts! After doing the usual trawl through Internet reviews we made our choice with Mexico. We preferred to be a little bit further from busier resorts such as Cancun but still have the choice to seek out activities and hustle and bustle when we wanted to. It also looked absolutely gorgeous – white sand, palm trees and margaritas; what’s not to love?!
Our main hopes for holidays generally is that we will be pretty much guaranteed sunshine, a nice pool, a beach, good food and drink and somewhere to explore when we get bored of all of the above! Even though we’re both fair skinned and burn quite easily, we still love the sunshine so that was key for our honeymoon. Something with a little more luxury was important too, as your honeymoon is the one opportunity to push the boat out a little!
There can be pressure to “go big” – typically to empty your bank account and really splash out, however we knew we wanted to spend a good fortnight somewhere and not feel the pinch too much afterwards, so our honeymoon choice suited us perfectly.
First impressions were stunning and we received such a warm welcome – along with a frozen Pina Colada, which was heaven after a 9 hour flight! We played ‘spot the iguanas’ as our little golf cart made its way to our section of the resort grounds. Palm trees, white sand beach, azure blue sea…we were happy campers.
Having that time to reflect on the whirlwind that inevitably is the wedding is also really precious. Add no pressure to do anything or be anywhere, sunshine beating down every day without fail, refreshing cocktails and gorgeous food whenever we felt like it – all in a season where the UK weather is becoming autumnal and depressing.
One of our highlights was definitely heading to a nearby beach to snorkel and swim with wild green sea turtles and (harmless) sting rays. They were huge and incredibly beautiful, it was an honour to witness these stunning creatures in their own habitat. Another highlight I’ll certainly never forget was being laid in hammocks next to each other at a stunning nearby cove beach, listening to the waves, with an ice cold drink, salsa and nachos and a cute kitten making us feel welcome. Not as impressive to others perhaps but we’ll never forget that moment.
We would recommend Mexico in a heartbeat, we felt it had it all. The Riviera Maya coastline in particular remains relatively quiet and not too commercialised. The people are lovely and welcoming and the landscape and natural features couldn’t be more beautiful. I really hope to return there one day – possibly when our new arrival is a little older!
We really don’t think, if given the option to do it again but go elsewhere, we would! We genuinely loved our choice and made such wonderful memories.
