5 Minutes with . . . Blackwell’s Butchers

Blackwell’s Butchers has always had a cult following of its own. Famed not only for its meats, the service and artisan lines from local producers also set it worlds apart from your everyday village butcher shop. Having provided a wedding catering service for a number of years, the acquisition of their cool Street Food Van brings a new and exciting concept to their repertoire. With the ability to serve a tailored menu directly to your guests from the van, Blackwell’s are offering a quality service and hearty, rustic food, with that added touch of awesome. I met with Anna to discuss their exciting new idea.

“The Street Food Van was born out of necessity. For years we’d cater for events with barbeques, but we realised that a van could really benefit us – we wouldn’t have to be setting up for hours on end, we could cook out of the van in a much quicker time. Research pointed us towards a company in Preston who supplies and customise these amazing vans. It was designed to perfectly match our requirements, and even matches the interior of our shop, with its black and white checked floor!

We provide catering menus specifically for the street kitchen – we run Street Food Saturdays, where the van is parked outside the shop, serving different foods and flavours from around the world. Our menus are constantly developing, and we’re very open to working with a couple to achieve their perfect wedding menu. Pie and peas is currently really popular – it used to be a bit old-fashioned, but it’s seen as very retro and cool now and is proving really popular!

When working with a new couple I always like to meet them, get an idea of what they’re looking for, and provide them with menus. Some couples want a really formal and traditional service, but we’re more rustic and relaxed. We keep in contact on the run-up to the big day and are always available to help with selections. We also have a handy network of suppliers we work with. The couples who come to us are usually the couples not having a traditional hotel wedding, so they’re needing to sort their own furniture, catering and supplies. From glassware to pop-up bars to artisan cheese-wheel cakes (we also offer a pork pie wedding cake!), if we can help, we will! Generally, we can cater for around 150 but we’re always flexible.
