Tell us about your background in fashion and design?
I come from a very creative family having careers in fashion design, tailoring and photography which naturally influenced me as a child.
I set up the brand Kate Fearnley in 2002 which was an independent wholesale occasion wear womenswear label selling to independent boutiques throughout UK, Europe and as far as Dubai.
In 2006 I opened the boutique in Middlesbrough offering a made-to-measure service.
What made you decide to design wedding dresses?
It was a natural progression to then develop the occasion wear brand into bridal wear. I started with bridesmaids to test the water and as that had such a fantastic reaction we started to design and create some wedding dresses. We are now bout to launch our first official bridal collection.
Tell us about your favourite designs.
My favourites are the blush tones bridal dresses from the new collection with the heavy beaded lace overlay. It is so delicate yet has this intense heavy detailing that feels so luxurious and special.
What tips do you have for brides when choosing a dress?
Try styles that you wouldn’t normally go for as I find a lot of times a bride comes in with one idea and ends up with something completely different. Colour and tone is key to suit each person and it is important that you chose the right shade for your skin. Never rule styles out wen you are having it made-to-measure as the customer’s proportion and height will be factored into a design which you wouldn’t necessarily get if you buy off the peg.
