Ryan and Callum married in Novemeber at The Grand Hotel Hartlepool, with their glam day which suited the couple’s taste perfectly! Ryan and Callum now live together in Thornaby.
Me and Callum first met when I used to go to a hair salon Callum worked in within Thornaby. Although Callum didn’t cut my hair to begin with we started talking and both realised that we had a great connection. We both liked the same things and new how to make each other laugh. We exchanged telephone numbers and texted / called each other everyday. After a while Callum moved in with me and we have never looked back. We had only been together since February 2011 but we knew we wanted to make a life long commitment to one another, we just didn’t know when. One evening (22 October 2012) whilst watching the tv cuddled up, I whispered to Callum, will you marry me!? He immediately replied yes! The following evening we then started to tell all our friends and family who were thrilled to bits however, all asked the same question, when and where will it take place.
We didn’t really have a theme in mind however, all we knew is that we wanted it to look like no other wedding that had taken place at that venue. I (Ryan) planned the whole day and loved every minute of it. Although Callum took the role of the bride, I am very fussy when it comes to what I want. I had viewed pictures of The Grand Hotel and we had visited on many occasions. Although I loved the Pipers Suite, I still think it needed some extra wow factor for our big day. I therefore, decided that I wanted the starlight backdrop to be positioned at the top of the room where the ceremony would take place as well as candelabras, then moving the backdrop into the ballroom to go behind the top table as again I had not seen this before.
We were unsure as to where to have our wedding as we were unsure which venues offered Civil Partnerships. I googled this and The Grand Hotel came up in the search results. When looking at the pictures of the stunning ballroom we immediately fell in love. We were desperate to view the venue and therefore, made a telephone call and spoke to Kathleen Pichay, the wedding coordinator. Upon viewing the grand we immediately knew this was the place for us but it was not only due to the venue but because of the warmth Kathleen expressed upon meeting us.
Now the exciting part unfolded, the planning!
We had visited a wedding fair at the Grand which was hosted by Kiss The Bride magazine and there we spoke to Annette at The Sugar Rose. Following that, appointments were made. Annette at The Sugar Rose was very understanding in what we wanted and our cake was designed and ordered. Annette made two cakes for us and iced the bottom tier made by my mam and the remaining tiers.
On the evening before our wedding both families and friends settled down for an intimate meal in the hotel restaurant before me and Callum said our goodbyes as we would not be seeing each other till the ceremony. On the morning of the wedding I woke up early and could not relax with nerves. Plus I was downstairs making sure everything was going to plan. To my surprise Kathleen had started work early to make sure that everything was running smoothly.
I then returned to my room to get dressed and wait for my mam to accompany me down the aisle. Prior to this, we sipped champagne with friends and my son was there too drinking orange juice. The photographer then turned up and started taking snaps of us all. Callum had a very relaxed morning, he went down for breakfast with his parents sipped champagne and waited for the hairdresser to finish my hair, to then do his. Callum was with his close friend and mam enjoying that special time before he was called to come down.
Our bridesmaids flowers were designed and made by Heaven Scent along with our button holes/corsages. We were meant to have flowers as our centre pieces designed by Callum’s mam, however, on the Wednesday prior to the wedding the florist rang and advised that the flowers were of poor quality therefore, they were unwilling to provide them. With this bombshell I contacted Budget Brides who luckily had enough candelabras to go on our tables as our centre piece. My good friend Clare Hewson designed and made our favours.
For our honeymoon, we went to the Lake District for three nights after our wedding and then to Tenerife in April 2014 for an additional honeymoon which was absolutely fantastic. So much so we are going for our first anniversary!
The only advice we would have to couples planning their weddings would be to do exactly what you want to do and enjoy every minute as the day absolutely flies.
Three words to describe your day:
Happy, memorable and special.
One final thing, we were overwhelmed with service we received from all the staff at the grand and a special thank you to Kathleen Pichay / Lynne Hayes / Amanda Lee-Thomas for everything you done for us!
