It’s vintage week at KTB! We take a look back at some beautiful and real vintage weddings from yesteryear…
Roger and Jane Lombard – Rebecca Lombard-Earl’s parents
The couple met at Duffield Young Conservatives (the local cattle market) in 1962 and started going out in 1963. They then married at Quarndon Church in September 1968. When they met, Mum was still at tech/art college and Dad was a university apprentice at Rolls Royce.
The bride wore a white satin gown with Nottingham lace over-gown. It had a high neckline and originally the sleeves were lined but Jane (my mum) asked them to remove it so as to show the lace. (She also wanted the neckline lowering), as she was very fashionable but her mother in law who insisted on paying for the gown, refused! She borrowed the tiara and huge bouffant multi-layer shoulder length veil from her cousin.
If Mum had had her way the gown would have had an illusion bodice and would have looked perfectly in place at a wedding today nearly 40 years later.
My mum’s dress is carefully packed away and I am saving it hoping my 10 year old daughter will wear it in in years to come as like her grandmother she is tall and slender. Or if fashions change she will maybe use the lace to fashion herself a dress as age already has the sewing bug.
Roy and Hazel Hadwick – Bex’s maternal grandparents
The couple met whilst my grandfather was on leave in the war and he had been badly injured.
He visited the pub that my grandmother’s family owned and said that’s the woman I am going to marry. He was already engaged to someone else but he broke it off and married my grandmother in June 1944 at a church in Belper.
The bride wore a flowery pattern silk damask with Gibson sleeves and a V neck, with gathers at the wrist and tint covered buttons. She wore a baroque style covered headband to secure the cathedral length tulle veil, with distinctive wide edging. They must have either collected the entire family station coupons or used linen from the family pub The Rose and Crown.
