We are delighted to feature the wedding of Sophie and James, they really made the day their own; a celebration of everything that they love.  They chose The Tetley, Leeds and I can see why, this venue perfectly suited them and allowed them to create a beautifully personal celebration.  With special Thanks to Paul Joseph photograph for the beautiful images.

To set the scene for those who don’t know the venue The Tetley is a centre for contemporary art in the heart of Leeds’ South Bank. Housed in the 1931 headquarters of the Joshua Tetley & Son brewery, The Tetley opened in 2013 as a gallery with a learning studio, work spaces for the creative industries, restaurant and bar. Described by the London Evening Standard as “the heart and soul of Leeds’ art scene”.

What made you choose your venue?

We wanted a venue that really represented the things we’re interested in – mainly good food, beer and art! The Tetley is an old brewery that has been renovated and made into a restaurant, bar and gallery – as we’re both city people we wanted somewhere in the centre of Leeds that reflected that. The Tetley was perfect and they were so helpful – Charlotte in particular was a pleasure to work with! Guests were offered tours of The Tetley which was a really nice touch from the venue. For the evening we had the whole of the bar and outside area and had a band and music all night long.

What was the main ideas for your wedding?

We wanted a wedding that really matched us – we’re both into reading and art and I’m a big fan on anything crafty so we wanted to pick a venue and theme that really matched. We wanted a relaxed celebration with all our favourite people around us. We picked our favourite flowers and our favourite authors and went from there. We wanted a wedding that felt homemade and my Mum was a huge help bringing the vision to life!

How did you entertain your guests?

After the ceremony at Leeds Town Hall we welcomed guests at The Tetley with themed cocktails and tours of The Tetley so people could find out more about the history of the building (or sit out in the sunshine if that’s more their thing!). After dinner we had a band and a DJ. The DJ was really important for us as they kept everyone up dancing all night!

Did you get creative and DIY any of your own wedding?

DIY details were a huge part of the day. Right from the start we wanted the wedding to have a DIY feel – Sophie is a screen printer so printed our own invites in the style of Penguin books. The venue was filled with handmade decorations – from succulents in books, through to book folded decorations and handmade bunting. My Mum is a very talented lady and made nearly all of the decorations herself by hand! One of our favourite touches on the day was our homemade Polaroid guestbook board – every guest had a tag that they needed to replace with a Polaroid photo of themselves on the board. Everyone had a photo taken and filled in the guest book!

Can you describe a memorable moment from the day?

Spending time on the roof of The Tetley getting our photographs taken – we had such an amazing view over the city and a lot of fun. Paul and Kelly are great photographers and really made us feel at ease.

Can you describe your dress, and how did you find it?

We bought the dress from Monsoon – I’d tried on 15 dresses from lots of different stores and price ranges and when I tried the dress on from Monsoon I knew it was the one! It was a beautiful lace dress. I found it with my mum for £150 in the Monsoon outlet – we’d put a bigger budget aside for the dress but I tried it on and knew it was the one!

Tell us about your bridesmaids’ dresses and grooms outfits?

We went for grey suits from Slater’s for the groom’s outfit and bright blue dresses for the bridesmaids’ dresses. These matched the other decorations and really made the bright yellow of the sunflowers pop in the photos.

What advice would you pass on to couples planning their wedding

Take some time out to get some photos just the two of you – it’s nice to get a bit of time to chat together as you’ll get whisked off in so many directions with so many people to see! Lots of people don’t these days and we were considering not going this – but when the photos came back we were so pleased that we did it. Paul and Kelly asked us to come outside in the ‘golden hour’ as an unplanned part of the day and we’re so pleased we did!

Talk us through the build up to the ceremony, what happened were you nervous?

I was a bit nervous (mainly about falling down the aisle!) but I got to hang out with my best friends on the morning and had a few other friends popping in during the morning so nerves quickly turned into excitement! It was lovely to be able to travel to the ceremony with my Dad – it was nice to have this time together.
