It’s the holiday of a lifetime. Your honeymoon is something that you only get to do once, making it the ultimate opportunity (or excuse) to indulge in a little bit of luxury. But forget the proposal, the next big question is where do you choose for your post-big day escape? Whether you’re a sun-seeker, or a lover of culture, from luxury beach getaways to American road trips, there’s a honeymoon to suit your own personal taste and style. Here at Kiss The Bride we’re always dreaming of holidays, so here’s our pick of honeymoon destinations that you won’t want to say no to…
The Maldives
Picture the scene, you arrive by seaplane with incredible views of the clear blue Indian Ocean, dotted with sandy islands. You step out onto the jetty to be greeted by a row of water villas propped up on stilts with the cool waves beneath them. The Maldives makes the perfect honeymoon choice for any couple looking for a romantic break away. While it can be quite a pricey honeymoon, you certainly get luxury for your money, and it gives you the perfect opportunity to peacefully unwind after all of that wedding planning! Spend your days relaxing on the white sandy beaches, or take a snorkelling trip to explore the surrounding corals and marine life.
Temperature: Typical temperature for the Maldives averages at 31⁰C – and there isn’t much fluctuation in temperatures amongst the seasons.
Best time to travel: The Maldives dry season is typically between January and March.
Don’t forget to pack: Sun-cream, a bikini, and a good book.
Venice
One of the most romantic cities in the world, a honeymoon in Venice is packed full of history and culture. It’s the perfect getaway for the couple who want a romantic break, but less of the peace and quiet. Of course no trip to Venice is complete without taking an idyllic ride along one of the cities many canals by gondola. Make memories by spending time with your other half whilst seeing some of the city’s main sights at Plazza San Marco. Relax with a candlelit meal and a glass of wine or champagne. And forget the typical Italian cuisine, Venice is best known for their local seafood.
Temperature: Temperatures can range from a cool 3⁰C in January, to a nice 23⁰C in July/August
Best time to travel: Summer months are the best time to travel to Venice, as these have the highest temperatures.
Don’t forget to pack: Comfy shoes and a camera.
Iceland
If you’re a couple who love adventure, Iceland is the ideal honeymoon destination. It’s probably not been on your list of top honeymoon contenders – until now. This trip is for the people who can’t think of anything worse than lying on a beach doing nothing for a couple of weeks. We have good news for anyone getting married in autumn, as this is the perfect time to spot the Northern Lights. Spend your days exploring the many glaciers and volcanoes, not forgetting the famous hot springs. A visit to Iceland would not be complete without a trip to the capital city Reykjavik, with modern boutique shopping, historic buildings, and the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa.
Temperature: Temperatures can range from a mild 14⁰C in the summer months, to a chilly 3⁰C in winter
Best time to travel: Autumn, as this is the best time to catch the Northern Lights, although tours run from September – April.
Don’t forget to pack: Warm clothes, good shoes and a swimming costume for the springs.
Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is fast becoming one of the top spa destinations in the world, making it a high candidate for a romantic, yet relaxing honeymoon. But Sri Lanka isn’t just all about the sandy beaches and couples massages (although this does put it high on our honeymoon lust list), it also has adventure for the adrenaline junkies. We’re talking white water rafting in the Kelani River, or try your hand at sliding down natural waterfalls into rock pools in Kataran-Oya, where you can then swim in the clear waters of the rainforest. Sri Lanka makes the perfect choice for the thrill-seeking couple who also appreciate a tranquil break.
Temperature: Temperatures can range from a cool 27⁰C in low season, to a scorching 32⁰C in high seasons.
Best time to travel: Between January and April, as this avoids monsoon season.
Don’t forget to pack: A go-pro to capture your adventures, and some flip-flops for the beach.
Route 66
How about a road trip to mark the start of your new life together, and nothing says road trip like the classic all-American Route 66. Start your journey in Chicago and venture all the way across to the east coast, ending your trip in LA. Stopping off at the Grand Canyon on route of course. Travel in style by hiring a convertible mustang, all that’s left is to whip out the Ray-Bans and find a good road map. Stopping off in motels along the way, you’ll definitely be living the true American dream!
Temperature: You’ll be travelling across 8 different states and 3 different time zones so temperatures really do vary!
Best time to travel: Late April to mid-October is best, as this means all attractions will be open and you really do get the best weather.
Don’t forget to pack: A good US road map, and your favourite CD for the road!
